Welcome
to my personal site, where I'm posting a bit about myself, and sharing a portfolio of writing and images.

I'm a former newspaper reporter who still likes to recount what I've recently seen. I'll leave fiction writing to others. My take is the wry side of real life, exploring, observing, weighing in.

Kudos to those who can craft a plot and map a complex journey through imagination. To me, character is a guy on a subway car, and conflict is what’s gnawing at me, just lately. I’m partial to stories that actually happened, told over coffee with at least one refill.

Along with blog posts and longer pieces, I'm also sharing Iphone photos taken on NYC sidewalks, underground or on the road. Most are posted on Instagram @joanatstake. Lately my muse is the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bay Ridge bordered by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. But of course, I could be anywhere.

I'm no heretic and don't know any saints. So why joanatstake? A burning love for wordplay, I guess. It felt like the right handle to let creative sparks fly.
